Variety's David Cohen visited Starburns Industries to interview Carol Koch, Anomalisa's sculptor, and to learn how she turned sketches and directors’ notes into finished designs. The video is part of Variety's "Artisans" series.

The "Theater of the New Ear" MP3 contains a brief intro by Carter Burwell and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, the Coen Bros. play "Sawbones," a brief intermission with Burwell and Hoffman, Charlie's play "Hope Leaves the Theater," an outro by the campest radio announcer ever, and a few seconds of ABBA's "Supertrooper."

BCK's running costs are fairly high, so we ask that you donate $6 to help keep us alive. Any problems downloading the file, please let me know.

I posted this on the FB page while the site was down. Here's Cotswold village of Bourton-on-the-Water. In the village, there's a scale model of the town itself. Inside the model... there's a model of the model.

Thanks to Daniel for the tip!

The Pitch: "The upcoming Kaufman novel in his own words 'is by design something I think is impossible to make into a movie. Sort of the opposite of what you're usually trying to do with a novel these days. It's like, it cannot be made. And that's what I set out to do.' And what's it about? 'It's about a movie,' the writer said. 'An impossible movie.'" (Source)

The Pitch: Michael is a celebrated motivational speaker, travelling the country, changing the lives of countless people. But in the course of transforming others, his life has become hollow and meaningless. It's a grey and monotonous existence where people literally look and sound identical.

Suddenly one day, a girl's voice pierces through the veil of nothingness. She fills him with such a rush of "aliveness", he's willing to abandon everything and everyone, including his own family, and escape with her to a better life.

Director: Duke Johnson, Charlie Kaufman
Cast:
David Thewlis (Michael), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Lisa), Tom Noonan (everyone else)

Anomalisa started life as a 'sound play,' part of Carter Burwell's "Theater of the New Ear" project. The film's cast played the same roles in the sound play.

frank-or-francis-infopage.jpgRelease: Possibly never?

The Pitch: This one's a musical-comedy - a Hollywood satire in which an auteur director (Frank) and a movie blog commenter (Francis) go to war with one another. Francis hates almost every movie he watches. For a more spoilerific summary, you can check this post.

Unfortunately, the project has struggled to find funding, and at this stage it looks like the film might not happen.

Director: Charlie Kaufman
Cast: Unknown, though the following actors were mentioned before the project seemingly fell apart. Jack Black (Francis?), Steve Carell, Kevin Kline (Richard / Richard's Head), Catherine Keener, Paul Reubens, Elizabeth Banks.

For now, this project seems dead. Charlie told Mike Ryan:

Kaufman: [Frank or Francis] could still happen. It would have to be reinvented, though. We had a whole cast and we were headed into pre-production. So, I’d have to get people back and who knows if they would be interested anymore. But, at this point, we don’t have any money, so that’s a secondary concern.

[...]

So, if you had given your scripts to other directors, you could have gotten two or three movies made in that timespan?

Kaufman: Absolutely. Just because I had the most extraordinary cast for Frank or Francis. Extraordinary. I mean, it was like crazy. And the reason I kept hiring more and more crazy, well-known people was because it was the only way I was going to get any money. Even then I couldn’t get money.

I don’t understand how that happens.

Kaufman: Well, you know, 2008 was a disastrous year for the economy. Everything changed in the business after that. No, really. Sony Pictures made Adaptation. Not like Sony Classics, Sony Pictures made that movie. They would never make that movie now. It’s impossible for them. It’s a different business. And if Synecdoche made $100 million, it would be a different issue. But, it didn’t. (Source)
