Aside from making some Godawful Chevy Chase movies (like there's another kind of Chase movie?), National Lampoon published their own satirical magazine from 1970-1998. (It resurfaced in '99 as a website.) "BIG WHOOP," you say. "BUT," I retort. Charlie Kaufman's first professional writing gig was with that magazine, circa 1984. Thanks to some memory-jogging from Steve Kindof and some Googling from myself, here be two of the pieces Charlie co-wrote in that time:
The Mystery of the Ghostwriter (parody of the old Hardy Boys series of mystery novels, and an up-yours to the self-proclaimed literary elite... oh how I love it whenever the literary elite are exposed as the pretentious phonies they are) (EDIT: *sigh* Apparently Mystery of the Ghostwriter was NOT co-written by Charlie Kaufman, despite what it says on National Lampoon's site. Steve Kindof has a hard copy of that particular issue of the magazine, and the authors of Ghostwriter are Will Jacobs and Gerard Jones. Baaaah.)
Eggboiler (parody of Stephen King's novels - as a King fan, I found this pretty hilarious, but it did seem to drag)
More soon, hopefully. If any of you have a collection of Lampoons, how's about rooting through the '83/'84/'85ish issues and dropping me a line if you find any of Charlie's stuff? I would put you in my will.
