Sammy at the AV Club

BCK has always been a fan of Tom Noonan. (And by BCK, I mean me.) (And by Tom Noonan, I mean Tom Noonan.) The A.V. Club has a lengthy interview with the man who played Sammy in Synecdoche, and it's essentially a rundown of Noonan's entire career, with his own thoughts about the things he's appeared in. He also voiced characters in Charlie's radio play, "Anomalisa." (You know - the one Kaufman wrote under the "Francis Fregoli" pseudonym, and everybody was all "Waaait, who the hell's Francis Fregoli? Is it Kaufman in disguise? I'll bet it's the Cohen Brothers. Or Donald." And before you ask: no, I don't have an MP3 of that play, or the script, and I have no clue where to find either, but I'm always on the look-out.)

Synecdoche, New York (2008)—“Sammy Barnathan”

TN: That was really fun. I think I had more fun than anybody else in the movie. At times, I could feel on the set that people were really down about how bad everything going on was. But I had a great time on the movie. Charlie and I are sort of friends—he had written a play for me years before, called Anomalisa, for me and David Thewlis. So Charlie and I'd worked together with him as a director before Synecdoche, so I was really comfortable with him, and it was really easy. Still was really fun—Philip Seymour Hoffman's really fun to act with. We're very different as actors, and it sort of made it interesting and funny. (Source)

He goes into more detail about working with Hoffman, but I'm not here to do everything for you. Click on the link, you lazy bastards!

On the subject of Noonan, if you've never seen Michael Mann's Manhunter, you probably should - particularly if you've seen Red Dragon. Sean Penn's The Pledge is great, too, but it turns out they changed the ending due to a) studio interference and b) Scientology. Kinda.

Also, major bonus points to the person who mentions Darin Morgan in the comments under that article. We love Darin Morgan to a large and unhealthy degree. As Charlie K fans, you guys should seek out his work.

ANYWAY. Thanks to Nicholas for pointing me to the article!
