A brand new draft of the Synecdoche, New York script landed in my lap last night, dated June 18, 2007 - that's after filming commenced, so it's a recent draft indeed. Can't put it online yet because I don't want to get hit with legal papers, but I'll read it shortly and let you know what I think. Accompanying the script was a really interesting "Story Analyst Report" from Focus Features - a lengthy synopsis of the screenplay, followed by thoughts and comments from a Focus reader. More on that later. My source says:
...it's industry standard coverage. They've got it on high priority apparently so he presumes they'll make an offer for distribution
"They," being Focus/Universal. "He" being a friend of a friend of my source. (Wouldn't it be amazing if everyone's friend-of-a-friend turned out to be the same guy?)
For anyone familiar with the script's main characters, here's the official breakdown of who's playing who: Philip Seymour Hoffman as “Caden”, Catherine Keener as “Adele”, Michelle Williams as “Claire”, Samantha Morton as “Hazel”, Tom Noonan as “Sammy” (we love Tom Noonan, by the way) and Tilda Swinton as “Maria”.
More proof that we have the best correspondents ever in the history of the internets (I don't know why I'm saying "we"; I guess my subconscious and I): Rob from Spain has sent in a spiffy Spanish translation of Synecdoche's first draft, and it's very professionally done. BCK goes bilingual! Classy. The translation will be going online at the same time as the other drafts.
Seems like filming may have wrapped on Synecdoche - in the past fortnight there have been a few articles about one of the stars, Samantha Morton, who's currently pregnant with her second child. They say she has just returned to London, having "just finished shooting the Charlie Kaufman film." Of course, now we have post-prod to wait through, and Charlie likes to spend a lot of time in the editing room, shifting things around and playing World of Warcraft on lunch breaks. At least, he seems like a WoW kind of guy to me.
