How's about some reviews, eh?
Eric Harrison of the Houston Chronicle gives Eternal a 'B'.
"Heavier on concept than on emotion" is the verdict from Robert Denerstein, Rocky Mountain News.
3 out of 4 from the Salt Lake Tribune. Loved Kaufman, not too keen on Gondry.
3 from Soren Anderson at Tribnet.
3 out of 4 from Lisa Kennedy at the Denver Post.
"The thinking is shallow. The emotions are tepid. But the creativity is dazzling." Overall, though, it's a fairly positive review from Mick LaSalle.
Okay. Now contrast those with these.
'Sunshine' has brains and heart, according to Glenn Whipp.
Eternal could have been just another love story. Refracted through Kaufman's wonderfully weird prism, it's something truly memorable. So says AP's Christy Lemire.
From NY Daily news we get Jack Matthews's take: A masterpiece? Probably. Ingenious? Absolutely! Unforgettable? I'll see you at the 10th-year anniversary..
David Edelstein calls it "the best movie I've seen in a decade. For once it's no hyperbole to say, 'Unforgettable!'"
So Charlie Kauffman has a heart after all. "How appropriate that one of the most daring films to hit screens in years is brought to a level of true mastery not by a great idea or nifty plot device, but by a simple love story."
"It's the first must-see movie of the year - yes, even counting the one about Mr. Holier-Than-Thou". That's from Dead Brain. It's an odd little satirical review thing.
This charming love story eclipses Charlie's past efforts, according to Christopher Kelly from the Star-Telegram.
Box Office Mojo gives an A- and calls Eternal "a brilliant bit of surrealist cinema."
The NY Rimes chimes in with Elvis Mitchell's take on the movie.
Salon's Stephanie Zacharek tells us "Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a desperately moving ode to romance. Why do the filmmakers undercut its power with a bag of ironic tricks?" You might remember Stephanie was less than impressed with Adaptation, calling it a "cheat" and tearing into Charlie in a fairly lengthy piece.
4 stars from the Toronto Star.
If those aren't enough for you, go check out squillions more at Metacritic, MRQE and Rotten Tomatoes, where the news is almost all good.
I'm pretty much done with posting every single review that appears - I think we get the picture by now, yeah? From hereon I'll be sticking to reviews from major sites and any other particularly well-written/lengthy reviews. Oh, and interviews. Always interviews.
