Back around October 12 I quoted a post on one of the Chud Message boards from someone who'd read an interview with Valdís Óskarsdóttir, the editor on Eternal Sunshine. The interview came from an Icelandic movie site, and since my Icelandic is a little rusty, I couldn't read the article myself. You can scroll down and read the whole Chud post, but basically it claimed that Valdís was unhappy with changes that the studio asked for. Today I got an email from Valdís herself:
Dear Mick and other fans of Charlie Kaufman.
I should have been really honored and impressed by seeing my name on your web side, however you have grossly misquoted me and taken things out of context.
To tell you the truth, I think Eternal Sunshine is a great film. It´s funny and sad and emotional and innovative and original and different and explosive and impressive and exciting. I also think Jim Carrey is giving his best performance to date, and the other cast members have turned in great performances as well. It has been a long and winding road and many hard days nights in the cutting room but it has been FUN to work on this film and it still is FUN and I promise you, that you will have FUN watching Eternal Sunshine when it will find it´s way up to the big screen.
Until then, be patient. Great movies are worth waiting for, and you can quote me on that.
Please post this letter on your web side for all to see.
Valdis Oskarsdottir
So, there ya go. Apologies to Valdís, but in my defence I couldn't actually read the interview myself, so I had to just relay what was reported to me. And even then, I did qualify it by saying "I take a grain of salt with anything that comes from a message board."
On the glass-half-full side, Valdis Oskarsdottir visited BCK!
