...when we caught up with Kaufman at the BAFTAs on Sunday, he revealed that his next script isn't for a movie at all, but a play that blends music and dialogue, called Theatre For The New Ear.
“I'm writing a screenplay that's being performed at the Royal Festival Hall in London in May,” he told us. “It's an evening of two plays, one by me and one by the Coen Brothers. It's kind of in the form of a concert or radio play, with Carter Burwell (the Coens' regular composer) doing the musical score, and actors on stage with the orchestra and the foley artist.”
Sounds exciting, right? Well, it gets better. According to Kaufman, actors who are lined up to appear on the London stage for the two performances (‘Sawbones' by the Coens and ‘Hope Leaves The Theater' by Kaufman) include Meryl Streep, Hope Davis, Peter Dinklage, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Brooke Smith.
Wow, interesting. Major major thanks to Mike.
